Any organization
needs to be reminded of its vision and guiding principles and structure.
Several years before I came as your Director of Missions/Church Planter
Strategist in 1999 your leadership saw wisdom in restructuring The Montgomery
Baptist Association because the way things were being done were just not
working. They surveyed many Southern Baptist associations across the country
who were doing ministry right and came up with the present organizational
structure. I believe they did the right thing, especially
for an area such as suburban
DC.
The MBA is composed of 52
congregations and several missions and up and coming new works. Together
we carry out various activities lead by volunteers from the congregations.
The only limitation on what the MBA can do is the availability of volunteers
with ideas and commitment to the ministry. Ministry projects are coordinated
with MBA Churches. The Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware and the
North American Mission Board, works through the Director of Missions/ Church
Planter Strategist in
coordination with priority
team leaders.
Financing for the MBA comes
from the voluntary contributions of the member churches. The only regular
outside financial support is a substantial amount from NAMB and the BCM/D
for the Director's salary support as a NAMB appointed home missionary.
Other than that, the association does not receive money from the Southern
Baptist Convention's Cooperative Program.
The Coordinating Council carries
out associational business between Annual Meetings. It consists of Director
of Missions/CPS as Chairman, Moderator as Vice-chairman, Clerk, Treasurer,
Chairman of the Montgomery Baptist Foundation Inc., WMU Representative
(Baptist Women's Ministries), the four Priority Coordinators and MBA Office
Manager. Project Leaders may be asked to participate as long as their projects
are active. Meetings of the Coordinating Council are held regularly.
The four Priorities of the
Association are:
1) Start new work; 2) Strengthen
existing churches/resource churches; 3) Involve churches in cooperative
ministry; and 4) Encourage ministerial and other church staff.
It is the responsibility
of project leaders to work with Priority Team Leaders. They must propose
a ministry project to the Coordinating Council, which is reviewed by them
for approval, and then recruit his/her own team and oversee the project,
and meet with the council until its completion.
Some funding may or may not
be available at the MBA level in the budget for proposed projects. The
Coordinating Council in any case will assist the Project Leader in searching
for resources and in communicating
events.
The Montgomery Baptist Foundation
(previously known as The Montgomery Baptist New Church Fund, Inc.) is a
committee formed to act as trustees for any land, capital, or financial
holdings outside the budget. For tax purposes any moneys outside of operating
expenses must go into this fund. A separate charter and by-laws is in place
for the Montgomery Baptist Foundation. and it operates under the authority
of the MBA and carries out the business of the MBA according to its by-laws
during the year.
As you can see, the Association
is set up to do ministry. I think it is one of the finest setups in the
Southern Baptist Convention. I am thankful to be your Director and to minister
among you
Dr. Ron Blankenship, Director of Missions
